Elrond's and Gandolf's words seem to haunt him as hairy feet travel up and down the miles of stairs Rivendell must possess. Bilbo is exhausted, well fed for the first time in weeks, and wanting nothing more that to sink into the bath provided for him in his room. One would think that sleep would not only come easy, but be desired.
The truth is, Bilbo is looking for Thorin. The sickness, the one passed from grandfather to father, gnaws at him. Bilbo isn't sure where the dwarf is staying, but he's gone from raucous spot to raucous spot in hopes that Thorin will be there.
He comes upon Thorin quite by mistake, and very accidentally, walking around a terrace, when the moonlight catches in the beads of the dwarf's mane and shines across his path. Having already been the unfortunate witness to dwarven nudity at the fountain earlier that day (thank heavens he'd been well above it and not spotted by the bunch), Bilbo thinks nothing of alerting a noticeably naked Thorin of his presence by a slight cough only to have a decidedly different sound reach his ears.
Bilbo knows better than to eavesdrop, but he's been doing it a great deal of late and he's curious as to why the king under the mountain is making those particular noises standing with one hand against the far wall. Curiosity, after all, is a Hobbitish trait!
