The dwarf king is very grateful for the hobbit staying by his side. He's been a shoulder to lean on that he's needed. Far too much, but that's beside the point. No one brings it up, yet, but they've started to notice that Thorin and Bilbo are inseparable.
But Thorin is king, who are they to tell him who and what he can be with and when?
Thorin is hesitant at first to go near the gold, very much so, but with Bilbo's gentle goading, he concedes to it. So they start to catalog everything. The dwarf king gets frustrated, almost angry, if any but him and Bilbo step into the chamber without his permission. Even those who are his closest friends. Friends he's started to see less of, on his part anyway.
