And so Fili has the tonic made and Bilbo and the rest of the Company keep their distance as Kili gets paler and Fili brightens over the next few hours. It will still take time for Thorin's heir to come around completely, but the internal bleeding has stopped.

It's just after the darkest part of the night when Kili goes very still, eyes brimming with tears, and makes no more motion. There is a great cry through the camp and Bilbo, staying on the edge of the tent, waits. Waits until he hears how Thorin will express his grief.

All he can hear right now is Fili. Understandable. This is what happens when one part of a pair gets lost.
