Bilbo sees to it that the other dwarves have gone before he turns his gaze on Thorin and holds out a single hand for him to take. Bilbo's smile is full of relief and he sets himself against the rock wall of the tunnel he had come from.
"It had been a terrible misunderstanding," Bilbo confides in Thorin. "He had been hungry. Exhausted. Dragons can only sleep on gold and he wanted only to be allowed to rest. He hasn't realized what he had been doing. I explained the situation and be has agreed to leave and find a place unoccupied to finish his rest."
It's all a terrible lie but Bilbo plays it off with brilliant smiles and almost tears.
"I know there ought to be restitution but I can only negotiate with a dragon so far!"
